Nursery Rhymes

These are some nursery rhymes that we used when "Milan" was a baby.

"Round and round the garden"

Round and round the garden (Run your index finger around baby's palm.)
Like the Teddy Bear,

One step, two step, (Jump your finger up his arm.)

Tickly under there. (Tickle him under his arm.)

Round and round the haystack, (Run your index finger around baby's palm.)

Ran the little mouse,

One step, two step, (Jump your finger up his arm.)

In his little house. (Tickle him under his arm.)

"Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker's man"

Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker's man.

Bake me a cake as fast as you can.

Pat it and roll it and mark it with "B"

And put it in the oven for Baby and me.

It is a hand-clapping game between two people (a baby & a parent). It alternates between a normal individual clap with two-handed claps with the other person. The hands may be crossed as well.

If told by a parent to a child, the "B" and "baby" in the last two lines are sometimes replaced by the child's first initial and first name.

"Hickory Dickory Dock"

Hickory Dickory Dock
The mouse ran up the clock
The clock struck one
Down the mouse ran
Hickory Dickory Dock

"Ring a Ring o' Roses"

Ring-a-ring-a-roses,
A pocket full of posies;
ashes! ashes!
we all fall down.

"This Little Piggy"

This little piggy went to market.

This little piggy stayed at home.

This little piggy had roast beef,

This little piggy had none.

And this little piggy went

"Wee! Wee! Wee!" all the way home

The rhyme is usually counted out on a child's toes, each line corresponding to a different toe, starting with the big toe. A foot tickle is usually added during the "Wee...all the way home" section of the last line.

"Hey Diddle Diddle"

(The Cat and the Fiddle, or The Cow Jumped Over the Moon)

Hey diddle diddle,
The cat and the fiddle,
The cow jumped over the moon.
The little dog laughed to see such fun,
And the dish ran away with the spoon.
